SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE
The sharp contrast of colours is the most remarkable feature of the trio of the Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves. The hazy blues of the surrounding hills and an infinite sky, the chocolate brown of the Uaso Nyiro River, the white dusty soils, interspaced with the vivid greens of semi-desert vegetation and the prehistoric looking Doum Palm- the only palm tree which has branches, scattered amongst the granite boulders and ancient black lava flows, found in the Shaba Reserve. The region’s animal life also pays tribute to the artist’s palette, with curious blue- legged Somali ostriches, chestnut coloured reticulated giraffes, black and white Grevy’s zebras, Gerenuk gazelles, and the grey-green Nile Crocodiles which inhabit the Uaso Nyiro River which flows through Shaba and Samburu. Samburu is often considered the country’s best leopard- viewing area, and sightings of prides of lions, cheetah, monolithic herds of elephants and buffalos in all the reserves is practically guaranteed. The birdlife in this area, ranging from the Sand Grouse to the multi-coloured kingfishers and spectacular eagles and falcons is striking for its diversity, as for its colourfulness…

Day 03 | Lake Naivasha |

Proceed on to Lake Naivasha arriving in time for lunch at the lodge, spent your afternoon at leisure by the pool or perhaps enjoy a boat ride experience which can be organized at an extra cost.
LAKE NAIVASHA
This beautiful and expansive lake, set in the Rift Valley, gets its name from the Maa word for “tempestuous”, or moody. Located close to the now extinct volcano Mt. Longonot, the several vents and underwater caves that connect the two make it impossible to guess the exact depth of the lake, and the resulting currents and temperatures mean that the lake could be calm and serene in the morning, and choppy, cold and grey by the same afternoon! Naivasha was considered the heart of the opulent ‘Happy Valley’ settler population during the colonial era in the early 20th century, a trendy set equally renowned for their tempestuousness! Lake Naivasha is extremely popular with visitors who would like to enjoy a lazy boat ride to admire the proliferation of over 350 species of birds which include fish eagles and ospreys, herons and egrets, purple gallinules, lily-trotters, red-knobbed coots and black crakes, or to admire the families of hippos that inhabit the lake. Those who prefer a faster pace could hire a speedboat and cruise the lake in spectacular style!
Crescent Island, which can be accessed by road at times, depending on the water levels, is a unique wildlife sanctuary found on Lake Naivasha. An abundance of plains game inhabits the sanctuary, which is visited on foot; one of the main attractions on the island is an albino python, an amazing sight to behold, if it is in the mood to expose itself!

MOMBASA
The largest city on Kenya’s coastline of the Indian Ocean, which stretches for over 480Km, Mombasa, with its bustling and winding narrow alleys in its historic Arab Old Town, or its landmark structure- the old Portuguese Fort Jesus, or its eclectic mix of colonial buildings reminiscent of the British influence on the formation of the city, and later, of Kenya, as a country, is one of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in Africa.
For hundreds of years, it lured traders, missionaries and explorers from as far away as China, Holland, and Arabia, who were all eager to access the mainland through this natural gateway to the world. Most of the coastline is protected by coral reefs, which give birth to the long stretches of sandy, white beaches occasionally interrupted by river creeks. Snorkeling and watersports, such as scuba diving, big game fishing, sailing and windsurfing are popular pastimes at the beach, and the long, sunny days’ mean that the sunbathing and relaxing on the beaches are possible throughout the year.
